Rosemary and sage oils can be used as a natural meat preservative, and they work better than chemical additives. - Thursday, January 05, 2012 by Mike Adams, the Health RangerEditor of NaturalNews.com
(NaturalNews) Although some people already use the popular herb rosemary for seasoning their meat, this combination may become more common in the near future as food manufacturers respond to consumer demand for more natural products.
Currently, two of the most common additives used to preserve meat are BHT and BHA. But studies have linked BHA with cancer and BHT with hyperactivity, causing some consumers to avoid products containing them (read ingredients labels to find out if they're in the foods you buy).
In a 2006 study, essential oils of rosemary and sage performed better at preventing oxidative decay and preventing loss of polyunsaturated fatty acids in meat than a combination of BHA and BHT. This means rosemary oil and sage oil may be one of the best natural food preservers yet discovered, and instead of having detrimental side effects, these natural oils offers protective health benefits! Winston’s Comment:
Rosemary and Sage are well known herbs that have very good antioxidant properties as well as antibacterial and anti fungal properties. So it is no surprise that they could be used as an excellent preservative.
I have been looking for preservatives that didn’t have your typical side effects like cancer and detrimental properties to the liver and kidneys. Vitamin C - ascorbic acid and vitamin E - tocopherol, are common alternative preservatives. Clove oil has many good properties, but unfortunately, its flavor is so pungent it alters anything it touches. So it is truly good news that rosemary and sage have such great preservative properties.

When you buy cereals, nuts, meats, or sausages in the grocery store, you are usually getting a little BHA and BHT with your food. Often, they are embedded into the box or the wrapping of the food, especially in the case of cereals. This is why it is so important to read ingredient labels – you are the effect of what you eat.
Only by making good choices and avoiding ingredients that you don’t know or that are bad, can you win at the healthy eating game. When you go out of your way to get the highest quality food available, you do yourself and your children a favor. Recently, my son went away to attend culinary school, and I wondered if he would resort to an average American diet, but lo and behold, he is making healthy choices. Children will follow your education and your example. If you teach them to eat a healthy diet, when they leave home, they generally will. However, if you only tell them to eat well but buy the cheapest food you can find, and eat fast food regularly, they will do what you do.
